In this post I give a simple example of a cloud computing application.My example is based on business email. Email has been around for quite some time and the use of webmail has changed things a little. Webmail is a simple and easy to understand example of cloud computing.

Standard Email
Standard email application works when someone uses a computer with email client software and logs in to the mail server to send and receive messages.

Limitations
Each remote computer has to have email client software installed, maintained, and configured for each user. The user is limited to that remote computer.

Webmail in the Cloud
Webmail however, works a little different. The user logs in to the mail server by using a web browser and can read and send messages directly from the browser.

Flexibility
You can use webmail from any place with internet access. You can check mail at work, home, or on the road with a mobile device. The remote computer needs no configuration or maintenance just a simple web browser.

What makes webmail cloud computing is the software and hardware reside on the server and users access the application remotely from any internet connection.

If you can choose a .com name for your site especially if it is a business. We all know that it is not always possible to get the .com name you are looking for. What is the next best thing? I would have to say .net can work well also.

There are many other domain extensions like .info for informative sites and .org for organizations. Another good example is the country based names like .us for united states. There are quite a few options available now a days and more to follow.
